Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
