Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
