Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
